The Sounds of Progress, San Diego: Jane Goodall
Girl 1: Hey, did you watch survivor last night?
Girl 2: Yea, I would never live like a monkey for a million dollars.
Girl 1: Well, you do know that Jane Goodall did for her entire life, and she wasn't paid at all. She was rewarded in new and fascinating discoveries about how chimpanzees live.
Girl 2: Oh yea, she was that lady who lived her whole entire life like a monkey because she was obsessed with them, right?
Girl 1: Well, obsessed isn't the word I would use, but she truly loved all nature, especially chimpanzees. Goodall was inspired by nature at a young age and one of the dreams she accomplished was living in Africa studying nature.
Girl 2: I bet she wanted to be like the characters in Tarzan and Jungle Book because they got to live in the jungle like monkeys.
Girl 1: She did in fact. She loved those stories, and at the age of 11 was fascinated by the mystique of the jungle, and hoped to live there someday.
Girl 2: Did she venture in the jungle by herself? So, if Leaky was similar to Goodall, how come you hear more things about Goodall?
Girl 1: Great question. No one knows why, but what I'm guessing is that Goodall had more of a passion for chimps than Leaky.
Girl 2: What exactly did Goodall discover?
Girl 1: She found ways that chimpanzees use tools in their everyday lives: how they bathe, communicate, eat, sleep, and clean.
Girl 2: Sounds like she was a pretty busy woman.
Girl 1: Oh, she was. She spent her whole life in the jungles of Africa gaining the chimps' confidence doing something she loved.
Girl 2: I guess I would spend my whole life living like a monkey if I was really doing something I loved.
Girl 1: As long as you follow Jane Goodall's quote, you will succeed in doing what you love. She said, "If you really want something, and really work hard, and take advantage of your opportunities, and never give up, you'll find a way."
