The Sounds of Progress, San Diego: Elizabeth Blackwell

Girl 1: Walking down the long carpet Elizabeth Blackwell was graduating from medical school, the only girl in her class. Surprisingly, she's very confident and wasn't nervous at all. She stood in a long line of graduates and being the only woman, she stood out. All the men were dressed in fancy caps and long gowns. When she looked towards the audience she saw parents staring at her in disbelief that she was actually graduating. That just gave her more confidence that she had accomplished what she came here to do.

Girl 2: Elizabeth Blackwell never gave up. I know a lot of people hear and say that but she was one of the few people who really proved it. She had to be brave and prove people wrong when no one believed in her, like her classmates, they were all boys. So when the school principle asked them if they would accept a female medical student, they laughed taking the question as a joke and said yes.

Girl 1: After many years of success she went into work with her sister and another woman doctor in an environment that was still filled with men.

Girl 2: Today she is still seen as a role model to all women who want to pursue their goals no matter how hard.
